"The will of man is not expressed in disorder or violence; that is the mark of suffering." Marshal Rosenberg would totally agree.

"If a child carries out the will of a teacher because he is afraid or because his affection is exploited, he has no will, and obedience that is secured by suppression of the will is truly oppression."

"The real aim of all children was revealed as constancy in work and spontaneity in choice of work, without guidance of teachers. Following some inner guide, they occupied themselves in work different for each that gave them joy and peace." No different from adults.

"The child concentrates on those things that he already has in his mind, that he has absorbed in the previous period, for whatever has been conquered has a tendency to remain in the mind, to be pondered." The power of the adult in the choice of what he exposes his child to.

"This strength of imagination in the child under six is usually expended on toys and fairy tales, but surely we can give him real things to imagine about, so putting him in more accurate relation with his environment." Seriously.

"How can we speak of Democracy or Freedom when from the very beginning of life we mould the child to undergo tyranny, to obey a dictator?" Couldn't have said it better myself! I love this lady!

"If we wish to alter the habits and customs of a county, or if we wish to accentuate more vigorously the characteristics of a people, we must take as our instrument the child, for very little can be done in this direction by acting upon adults. To change a generation or nation, to influence it towards either good or ill, to re-awaken religion or add culture, we must look to the child, who is omnipotent. The truth of this has been demonstrated of late by the Nazis and Fascists, who changed the character of whole peoples by working on children."

Education For A New World
This is the book which has introduced me to the world of Dr. Montessori's writings. Every parent and teacher, for that matter every individual should read this book so as to understand how human psychology is built right from the formative years. This book especially discusses about a child's mental and physical growth in the first 6 years of life. It even discusses the embryonic development that takes place before the child comes out to this world.
Dr. Montessori explains the new methodology she implemented while taking care of special children and how she formulated the montessori approach for the child education. This book also presents the work she has done with various schools and child care centres around the world and how the children have responsed to the approach. My children have been attending Montessori House of children and naturally, it has made me to pickup this book to understand the child behaviour in much more detail.

This book gives an overview of the expectations, capabilities and a possible method that helps the children achieve the potentialities of children through the first six years of their life. The book is easy to read and Dr. Montessori talks about her own method which she evolved through observation. The amount of thought and analysis that she went through to evolve the method is mind-blowing. She stumbled upon the field of Education - thanks to discriminations in the Science and medical field - and came out with a method that closely resembles the child's natural path of development. This again is a must-read for parents, caregivers and teachers.

Her argument as to why children need to move as they learn, that the old education system needs a revamp, and children need purposeful work not toys. Most still applicable today, but some of her reasoning about how movement is necessary for higher level thinking. I wonder how she would apply this theory to Stephen Hawking.

There's a lot of interesting content but an investigation on child studies has to come from an impartial place. Montessori lets her own beliefs and opinions get in the way of the facts.

This book, written later in Montessori's life, reads like a grand synopsis of her life's work. It highlights much of the stronger material from previous books, the overarching ideas that give glue to her philosophy of education. I love that she got all Cosmic after her time in India; it's such a perfect way to tie all of her thoughts and methods to a truly holy cause--the cause of humanity and world peace.

The idea of "evolution" plays a strong role in the philosophy of this book. Evolution, and the universal life force that drives it, move the child forward in the drama of his life, and the drama of Earth, and of the universe. Adults are driven by this force as well, she notes, but they have the ability to observe it and the responsibility to check its impulses. Thus the sacred duty to meet the needs of the child, so that the child may be free to grow into his Cosmic Task in the universe.

Education must be holistic, never ignoring who the child is in his entirety.

"The child has his own laws of growth, and if we want to help him grow, we must follow him instead of imposing ourselves on him."
